Two very different things get sold as 'online training.' The difference matters for learning, for competency, and for defensibility.

"Online" NFPA 70E arc flash training covers two very different products, and buying the wrong one for the wrong people is a common and expensive mistake. This guide breaks down live instructor-led versus self-paced training, where each fits, and how to make sure whatever you choose actually reflects the current 2027 edition.

The two formats are not interchangeable

Self-paced (on-demand) training is a recorded course a worker clicks through on their own schedule. Live instructor-led (virtual) training is a real class held at a set time with a live instructor and live interaction. Both are "online." Only one lets an instructor confirm that a worker can actually apply what the standard requires.

Self-paced (on-demand) training

Where it fits: broad awareness at scale and on a budget - orientation for new hires, general electrical-safety awareness for adjacent roles, or a refresher on concepts.

Where it falls short: no one answers a question in the moment; there is no way to verify a worker can perform a boundary determination or select PPE correctly; and - the quiet risk - content can lag the current edition. If a self-paced course still teaches the 2018 or 2024 edition, or mentions the prohibited approach boundary (removed back in 2015), it is training your people on the wrong standard, and you may not find out until it matters.

The competency gap: clicking 'next' and passing a multiple-choice quiz proves attendance, not capability. For anyone who will actually open an energized enclosure, that gap is the whole problem.

Live instructor-led (virtual) training

Where it fits: anyone who will perform or supervise energized work, and any organization that wants demonstrated competency rather than a completion certificate alone.

A live class gives you real-time questions, discussion of your actual equipment and scenarios, and an instructor who can confirm the group understands - and can apply - the material. It is also the format best suited to the parts of the 2027 edition that are judgment calls rather than facts to memorize:

  • staffing and positioning the new additional person for permitted energized work (130.2(A)(2));
  • building a task-level emergency response plan and rehearsing responder access;
  • running a job briefing that actually protects the person doing the work.
